Kaelyn Williams
The University of Minnesota Duluth cross country season for 2012 came to a close Saturday at the NCAA Division II Central Region in Joplin, Mo., as the Bulldog women placed eighth and the men 12th.
As she had done in all previous five races this fall, Kaelyn Williams finished first among youthful Bulldogs, taking 16th out of a field of 179 runners with a 6K clocking? of 21:53.7. The Golden Valley, Minn., native was followed by fellow freshman Hannah Olson (22:02.02; 22nd place), and the sophomore trio of? Alexandra Rudin (22:30.09),? Amanda Boman (22:58.5; 67th) and Victoria Lutz (23:22.1 (87th).
This marks just the second time in the last five seasons the Bulldogs did not qualify for the NCAA II championships. Meet champion Augustana College, Winona State University, the University of Mary, Missouri Southern State University and Pittsburgh State University earned that honor Saturday.
In the 23-team men's competition, sophomore Dan Nielsen reigned as the top Bulldog, placing 34th (out of 163 individuals) in the 10K event with a time of 31:16.2. Seniors Ryan Eason (31:32.9; 43rd) and Cole Toepher (32:08.6), both appearing in their final collegiate races, were next followed by junior Aaron Handorff (32:47.0) and freshman Mitch Fisher (33:09.4; 103rd).
Augustana College, Missouri Southern State, Minnesota State University-Mankato and Southwest Baptist University all qualified for the NCAA II national meet.
