Freelancers cobble together part-time jobs to make 'portfolio careers'

By Alyssa Goldman, LearnVest

Russ Juskalian, 30, is a journalist based in Munich who has reported from Southeast Asia, above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland and from the Himalayan foothills in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

As you?d expect, he writes articles related to his travels. But, unlike most journalists, he also sells his photos, giving him a second career as a photographer.

If that weren?t enough, in his spare time, he teaches classes in science writing, international freelancing and travel writing through an online program offered by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

?My schedule varies dramatically from week to week, month to month,? he says. ?Because I have so many competing things going on ? writing, editing images, pitching, preparing for upcoming classes, grading student work ? I tend to compartmentalize my time, so that I have a series of tasks that I must get done before moving on to the next ones.?

So-called ?slashers,? like reporter/photographer/teacher?Juskalian, are part of an emerging trend known as the ?portfolio career.? And if you?re the right personality type, it can be an incredibly rewarding ? and profitable ? career move.

How portfolio careers became so big
Marci Alboher, author of ?One Person/Multiple Careers,? defines ?slashers? as individuals who?ve created a ?portfolio career? involving multiple identities. Their income comes from part-time employment, temporary work, freelance assignments or a personal business ? or they work a full-time job, while pursuing other lucrative interests.

Barrie Hopson, co-author of ?10 Steps to Creating a Portfolio Career,? says that this ?type of career offers a much more fulfilling work-life blend, not to mention a safety net of several jobs?so if you lose one or choose to quit a job, you?ll still have other sources of income.

During the heart of the recession, people took on portfolio careers out of necessity. So now that the job market is improving,?why is the slasher lifestyle becoming even more common.

?Increasingly, people are finding that they don?t want to do the same thing day in and day out,? Hopson says. ?The traditional, single-track career pattern of the last century (think ladder) is now more difficult to find, and if you do pursue that, you?ll almost certainly have to move between companies.?

That said, portfolio careers aren?t for everyone.

To determine if a portfolio career is right for you, consult your high school extracurricular schedule, suggests?Erin Albert, author of ?Plan C: The Full-Time Employee and Part-Time Entrepreneur.? Did you dabble in one or more activities, such as theater, music, art or sports? ??If you craved variety, then you?ll most likely crave variety now,? Albert says.

Another question to consider: If you won the lottery tomorrow, and money was no object, what would you do with your life? ?If your brain excitedly goes in 50 different directions in answer to that question, chances are that you have portfolio career potential,? Albert says.

If you think that you might be made of the right stuff, consider these questions before jumping into a portfolio career:

* Do you multitask and manage your time well?

* Do you crave flexibility and creativity?

* Are you organized?

* Are you open to new opportunities?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, this path could be the one for you.

Only one of the 46 portfolio careerists that Hopson studied have returned to a single-track career in the past two years. According to Hopson, all of the participants claimed that they were happier as slashers, which is no wonder, since most of them earned more within two years of their portfolio career than they ever did as a full-time employee.

What to do before launching a portfolio career?
Foresee and handle any conflicts of interest.?This applies to conflicts both with a specific day job and at the career level. For instance, if you stay at your full-time job, but you need more time to dedicate to other interests, have an honest conversation with your employer to come up with the best solution. Additionally, make sure that your other pursuits won?t negatively impact that?career overall.

Only one of the 46 portfolio careerists that Hopson studied have returned to a single-track.

?The good and bad news here is that you have the power to create whatever custom-designed career you want,? Albert says. ?But it does take work and an honest appraisal of what you really want.??

Have at least one consistent line of work.?Alboher notes that it?s always smart to have one or two steady jobs, so that you have a base level of income. Alboher adds that many portfolio careerists take the anchor-orbiter approach, meaning one job requires a physical presence at a certain location during a certain time (i.e. office job), while the other jobs (i.e. freelance work) ?orbit? around it.

Start a rainy day fund.?Put six months to two years of savings in your bank account to support your cost of living ? just in case.?For full-time freelancers, the recommendation is at least a year?s worth of savings. (Read more on the?seven reasons why you need an emergency fund.)?If you?d like to create your own business, Albert suggests launching it while still working your day job. Whether you decide to quit or not, saving is an absolute must?especially if you have a family. Albert explains that a person with three kids, a mortgage and a lot of bills has different (and greater) risks to consider than a recent college graduate.

Portfolio careers also have many benefits
?Anyone who has ever been pink-slipped, fired or laid off understands the importance of moving multiple careers forward and not putting all career eggs in one basket (figuratively speaking),? Albert says. ?By juggling multiple careers, one can have flexibility and adaptability, which are two key skills every employee in this post-economic downturn needs to have to succeed in the future.?

Plus, if you do choose to return to a traditional work environment, your extensive repertoire and transferable skills from your portfolio career might give you a leg up against other applicants.

Juskalian definitely seconds the flexibility and adaptability comments, not only because his income is irregular, but because his work flow is, too. Depending on what?s going on in his personal life, his schedule can swing between periods centered around friends and family to periods of almost no personal time and all traveling, writing, editing and teaching.

?I find my lifestyle very fulfilling,? he says. ?But there?s no doubt that it takes a certain mentality ? and a lot of energy ? to juggle my career.?

Do people understand differences in mandating insurance coverage?

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the internet over the difference between mandating health insurance and mandating auto insurance for drivers. Simply put, if you do not want to purchase auto insurance, don?t choose to operate a motor vehicle, something many people don?t do and utilize public transportation. Mandating health insurance has no such escape. Simply by being alive you would be required to purchase it through the individual mandate.

Regardless of the seemingly straight forward and easy to understand difference between the two, one can not peruse the comments section of any recent article about the health care law being declared unconstitutional without inevitably seeing the old "OMGADZORS well I guess I shoulNDT have to puchaze auto inSURANCE either!!!"

My question is this: Are the folks who repeatedly try and hammer this argument down our throats simply unable to understand the difference between the two insurances, or are they just so desperate for a talking point that they will forgo giving it some rational thought in a rapid attempt to "win" the argument for their political affiliation?

There are several differences between mandating auto insurance and mandating health insurance:

1) Auto insurance is mandated by the individual states, not the federal government.

2) Auto insurance is not required of everyone; it is only required if you are driving. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

3) But the most important difference is this: The states that require auto insurance require it only to protect the OTHER drivers on the road. There is no state law requiring anyone to insure themselves or their own vehicle. No state requires you to buy auto insurance to cover your OWN medical expenses if you are injured in an auto accident. And the states do not require you to buy insurance to cover repairs to your OWN vehicle, (although your lender might.)

The people who try to hammer the argument down our throats are trying to defend the new health care law. There is no good defense, so they use that argument and also the one that says we all need to buy insurance so the freeloaders who don?t buy insurance don?t run up every one else?s premiums. Actually that argument is no good either, because the new law exempts most of the people who have not been buying insurance. For example: illegal immigrants, low income people and people who qualify for Medicaid are exempt. These are the people who are "not paying their own way" but these are the people who are not mandated to start "paying their own way." There was a good article in the National Review about this.

Black bears on the rebound in Nevada

Mar. 29, 2013 ? A new study from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Nevada Department of Wildlife ( NDOW) has pieced together the last 150 years of history for one of the state's most interesting denizens: the black bear.

The study, which looked at everything from historic newspaper articles to more recent scientific studies, indicates that black bears in Nevada were once distributed throughout the state but subsequently vanished in the early 1900s. Today, the bear population is increasing and rapidly reoccupying its former range due in part to the conservation and management efforts of NDOW and WCS.

Compelled in part by dramatic increases in human/bear conflicts and a 17-fold increase in bear mortalities due to collisions with vehicles reported between the early 1990s and mid- 2000s, WCS and NDOW began a 15-year study of black bears in Nevada that included a review of the animal's little-known history in the state.

Over the course of the study, black bears were captured both in the wild and at the urban interface in response to conflict complaints. The captured animals used in the study (adult males and females only) were evaluated for multiple physiological indicators including condition, sex, reproductive status, weight, and age, prior to being released. From the information gathered, the population size in the study area was estimated to be 262 bears (171 males, 91 females).

Confirmed sightings and points of capture from 1988 to present were mapped and presented in the report to illustrate current population demographics, and will be used to inform bear management in Nevada.

"It's critical to understand the population dynamics in a given area in order to make informed decisions regarding management," said WCS Conservation Scientist Jon Beckmann. "This includes decisions on everything from setting harvest limits to habitat management to conservation planning in areas where people will accept occupation by bears. We used this long-term study to determine if reported incidents were due to an increasing or expanding bear population, or people moving to where bears are located. The answer is both."

The study area extended from the Carson Range of the Sierra Nevada eastward to the Virginia Range and Pine Nut Mountains, and from Reno south to Topaz Lake -- an area collectively referred to as the Carson front. Because many captures were in response to conflicts, the urban interfaces of cities and towns of the Lake Tahoe Basin were included.

Nevada's Black Bear History Unraveled

In looking to integrate information on the historical demographics of black bears into their study, the authors found that little published scientific research or data was available and that the species' history in Nevada went largely ignored until 1987 -- when complaints arising from sightings and road collisions with vehicles began.

Historical records compiled by retired NDOW biologist Robert McQuivey that included old newspaper articles, pioneer journals dating as far back as 1849, and NDOW records that had long been unavailable, were reviewed and confirmed that black bears were present throughout the state until about 1931. At that point, the authors concluded that "the paucity of historical references after 1931 suggest extirpation of black bears from Nevada's interior mountain ranges by this time."

"The historical records paint a very different picture of Nevada's black bear than what we see today. This new perspective is a good indication of what bear management in this state could involve should the population continue to expand," said the study's lead-author Carl Lackey of NDOW.

The authors believe that while over-hunting and conflicts with domestic livestock contributed to the bear's local extinction in the Great Basin, landscape changes due to clear-cutting of forests throughout western and central Nevada during the mining booms of the late 1800s played an important role as well. But as fossil fuels replaced timber as a heat and energy source, forestry and grazing practices evolved, and reforestation and habitat regeneration occurred in parts of the their former range, the bears rebounded.

Using the information gathered in their review of historic documents, the scientists mapped the distribution of black bears within the interior of Nevada during the 1800s and early 1900s. They recommend that historical range maps for the species in North America be revised to include the information produced as part of the study.

The study, Bear Historical Ranges: Expansion of an Extirpated Bear Population, appears in the current online edition of the Journal of Wildlife Management. Co-authors include Carl W. Lackey of the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Jon P. Beckmann of the Wildlife Conservation Society, and James Sedinger of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Pregnant Man: Judge Refuses To Grant Thomas Beatie's Divorce

PHOENIX -- An Arizona judge on Friday refused to grant a divorce for a transgender Arizona man who gave birth to three children after beginning to change his sex from female.

Maricopa County Family Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Arizona's ban on same-sex marriages prevents Thomas Beatie's nine-year union from being recognized as valid.

Thomas Beatie was born a woman and underwent a double-mastectomy but retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children.

Gerlach said he had no jurisdiction to approve a divorce because there's insufficient evidence that Beatie was a man when he married Nancy Beatie in Hawaii.

Beatie is eager to end his marriage, but the couple's divorce plans stalled last summer when Gerlach said he was unable to find legal authority defining a man as someone who can give birth.

"The decision here is not based on the conclusion that this case involves a same-sex marriage merely because one of the parties is a transsexual male, but instead, the decision is compelled by the fact that the parties failed to prove that (Thomas Beatie) was a transsexual male when they were issued their marriage license," he wrote in Friday's ruling.

Gerlach's ruling also said it didn't address whether Arizona law allows a person who was born female to marry another female after undergoing a sex change operation.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights, which isn't involved in the Beatie divorce case, has said courts have declared marriages involving a transgender person invalid in a handful of cases across the country, but that those cases had different factual and legal issues than those in the Beatie case.

Thomas Beatie, known as "The Pregnant Man," was born Tracy Lehuanani Lagondino in Oahu, Hawaii. He began testosterone treatments in 1997 and underwent double mastectomy and chest reconstruction surgery in 2002. He changed his Hawaii driver's license to say he was a man and had a Hawaiian court approve his name change to Thomas.

Gerlach's ruling noted that Thomas Beatie halted the testosterone treatments and that he didn't provide documentation for any additional non-surgical efforts.

Thomas Beatie married his partner Nancy in early 2003 in Honolulu and became pregnant because Nancy was unable to have children. Thomas Beatie conceived with donated sperm and gave birth to children who are now 4, 3 and 2 years old. The couple eventually moved to Arizona.

Beatie has garnered a range of media attention, making the rounds on talk shows such as Larry King and Oprah Winfrey and winning a spot on Barbara Walters' list of "10 Most Fascinating People" in 2008, alongside President Barack Obama, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and swimmer Michael Phelps. He also published a book, "Labor Of Love: The Story of One Man's Extraordinary Pregnancy," the cover displaying an image of a shirtless Thomas sporting facial hair and holding a hand over his bare pregnant belly.

NYPD officer says he taunted boy, 13, during stop

NEW YORK (AP) ? A police officer testified Wednesday that he taunted a potential suspect ? who turned out to be an innocent 13-year-old ? after he detained the boy under the New York Police Department's disputed program of stopping, questioning and frisking people on city streets.

Called as a witness in a civil rights case in federal court in Manhattan, Officer Brian Dennis conceded that he had told a handcuffed Devin Almonor to stop "crying like a little girl."

Asked on cross-examination if he thought the comment was appropriate, Dennis responded, "Looking back, no."

The Center for Constitutional Rights brought the lawsuit on behalf of four black plaintiffs who claim they were stopped by police because of their race. The center alleges that many of the 5 million stops in the past decade, mostly of black and Hispanic men, were made without cause.

Police officials say stop and frisk is a legal crime-stopping tool that has helped drive crime down to record lows. New York City saw the fewest number of murders in 2012 since comparable record keeping in the 1960s, and other major crimes are down to record lows, too.

U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin, who is hearing the case, has said in earlier rulings that she is deeply concerned about the tactic. She has the power to order reforms to how it is used, which could bring major changes to the force and other departments.

In the second week of the trial, the plaintiffs' lawyers pressed Dennis and another officer, Jonathan Korabel, to explain why they stopped Almonor as he walked alone on a Harlem street in 2010. Dennis testified that while responding to 911 calls about a disorderly crowd in the area, he spotted the teen reach for his waistband as if he had a gun.

"I'm a kid. I'm going home. Leave me alone," Dennis recalled the boy saying.

Dennis testified that when he stopped the boy he assumed he was much older because he was tall for his age and out on the street without supervision at 10 p.m.

Korabel testified that he didn't recall Almonor's objections. He claimed the boy was jaywalking and when stopped, started "yelling and making a scene" and "fighting" when the patrolmen tried to frisk him.

"It was a lawful frisk," Korabel said.

The officers handcuffed Almonor and found no weapon. They took him to a stationhouse.

His father, a retired police officer, was asked to come get him. When the boy's parents arrived, they argued and tussled with police officers, lawyers for the plaintiffs said outside court.

On Wednesday, lawyers for the plaintiffs also introduced an NYPD memo dated March 5 mandating that suspicious behavior prompting certain stops "must be elaborated" ? one of the remedies that had been demanded by critics of the practice.

In the past, officers were able to check off "furtive movements" on reports known as "250s" without further explanation. Now, "a description of that movement must be specified," the memo says.

Africa: much life in funeral insurance | beyondbrics

A growing desire for a decent burial among the less well-off in Africa is changing the map of things as far as insurance goes. With vast parts of the continent still uninsured, could the business of burials be one of the keys to opening up the insurance industry?

Funeral insurance policies are set to lead a rise in demand in Africa as the continent gears for a boom in the global insurance market, research shows.

Source: Munich Re

According to global insurer Munich Re, primary insurance premiums are expected to increase by ?2.2tn worldwide by 2020, with a ?35bn increase in Africa. Premiums in Africa are set to reach over ?85bn by 2020, up from ?50bn in 2012. One third of the Africa increase, or around ?10bn, is set to come from the property and casual sector, while the remaining two thirds, or about ?24bn, will come from the Life sector, which includes funeral cover.

Insurers are already reporting rising demand for funeral policies among poorer people, with Old Mutual, a South African insurer, saying it has sold funeral policies to almost a million lower-income clients in South Africa alone.

Demand for funeral insurance is particularly strong among poorer Africans because of the traditional importance attached to the ritual and an increasing desire for a ?decent burial? even among households in financial difficulties.

Junior Ngulube, chief executive of Munich Re?s African subsidiary, told beyondbrics: ?We expect demand for funeral insurance in Africa among the poorer sectors of the population to increase. For cultural reasons, this sector has an over-proportional demand for funeral insurance in relation to other classes of insurance compared with middle-class people. What drives this is the wish to be able to afford a decent funeral for family members, even though their financial capabilities are very limited.?

Munich Re?s September 2012 research reads:

With a few exceptions (such as South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritius and Kenya), most of the African continent is still inadequately insured. Continued growth of African economies can be expected to trigger future insurance demand in as yet under-tapped markets. Demand is emerging from low-income groups and the growing middle class for personal lines and other insurances. As disposable incomes continue to grow, so will demand for life and health insurance, and many Africans who already purchase these products abroad will switch to local providers once they become more readily available.

Old Mutual is also upbeat about the expected boom in Africa. The company has set aside R5bn for its expansion in sub-Saharan Africa. It also said it was very optimistic about the funeral sector.

A spokesman said: ?With regard to funeral policies, we are the leading seller of this product in South Africa already through our Mass Foundation business, which serves those people coming into the formal economy for the first time and has around 2m customers. Funeral policies account for nearly half the products we sell to our Mass Foundation customers.?

He added: ?We already sell funeral policies in a number of the African countries where we operate including Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Malawi, and we recently signed a deal with the National Jua Kali in Kenya, which is the co-operative for informal workers, to provide insurance services including funeral policies to its members, who previously had no access to insurance.?

Rice University professor served as presidential science advisor in the Clinton Administration

The National Science Board (NSB) announced today that physicist Neal Lane, a former Presidential Science Adviser and former National Science Foundation (NSF) director, is the 2013 recipient of its Vannevar Bush Award.

Lane is the Malcolm Gillis University Professor at Rice University and holds appointments as Senior Fellow of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and in the university's department of physics and astronomy.

He served as assistant to President Clinton for Science and Technology and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy from August 1998 to January 2001.

He was the NSF director from October 1993 to August 1998.

"Among the hallmarks of Neal's NSF directorship was the recognition that scientists must be an integral part of, rather than standing apart from, the civic life of our nation and have the willingness to be a vocal advocate for their position," said Dan E. Arvizu, NSB chairman. "He spoke publicly and wrote widely about the need for researchers to engage in a dialogue with the broader public, the majority of whom seldom have any interaction with scientists, about the centrality of science--and engineering and mathematics--to the functioning of modern society.

"As Neal once wrote in the American Association for the Advancement of Science Yearbook, citing Einstein as a prior advocate of the position he was espousing, 'While there is great need for the public to have a better understanding of science, and we should promote this in every way possible, there is as great a need for scientists to have a better understanding of the public.'"

Neal concluded the piece to which Arvizu referred by saying, "In the final analysis, this larger engagement does not mean a focused or fixed research agenda. It does mean openness to new research challenges and unprecedented partnerships among diverse fields and interests. It does mean a commitment to effective communication of knowledge, and connections between discovery and the use of new knowledge in service to society. And it especially means placing a high priority on education and learning for all youngsters wherever they begin their lives."

Prior to becoming the NSF director, Lane was a professor of physics at Rice University and Provost, a position he had held since 1986.

In 1966, he joined Rice's physics department as an assistant professor. In 1972, he became a professor of physics and space physics and astronomy. He left Rice in mid-1984 to serve as chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs until 1986.

From 1979 to 1980, while on leave from Rice, he worked at NSF as Director of the Division of Physics. Lane received his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics at the University of Oklahoma. He was awarded a doctorate in physics from that institution in 1964.

Lane is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Women in Science. He has been awarded more than a dozen honorary degrees and received several other honors, including, in 2009, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal, the American Institute of Physics K.T. Compton Medal for Leadership in Physics, and the Association of Rice Alumni Gold Medal for service to Rice University. In 2011, he received the Distinguished Friend of Science Award from the Southeastern Universities Research Association.

Each year, the National Science Board presents the Vannevar Bush Award to exceptional, lifelong leaders in science and technology who have made substantial contributions to the welfare of the nation through public service activities in science, technology and public policy.

The award was established in 1980 in memory of Vannevar Bush, who served as science advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II, helped to establish federal funding for science and engineering as a national priority during peacetime and was behind the creation of the NSF.

Egypt: Activists to be questioned over clashes

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian prosecutors on Monday summoned several opposition politicians and activists for questioning over allegations they incited violence against members of the president's Muslim Brotherhood.

The summons came one day after the Islamist president sternly warned his opponents, saying he may be close to taking unspecified measures to "protect this nation."

Angry, shouting and pounding the table at times, Mohammed Morsi vowed to bring to account politicians found to have incited the violence on Friday, when Brotherhood members and protesters clashed outside the group's Cairo headquarters.

Nearly 200 people were injured in the clashes, the worst violence between the Brotherhood and its opponents in more than three months.

Those summoned include former presidential candidate Khaled Ali, former lawmaker Ziad el-Oleimi and several iconic figures from the pro-democracy movement behind the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak. These include Alaa Abdel-Fattah, Nawara Negm, daughter of Egypt's best known satirical poet, and senior opposition politician Mohammed Aboul-Ghar.

The summons, based on complaints filed by injured Brotherhood members, are likely to stoke tensions and extend the latest in a series of political crises roiling the nation since Mubarak's ouster two years ago. Coupled with economic woes and tenuous security, the ongoing bout of turmoil is by the far the worst since 2011, with at least 70 people killed and hundreds injured in protests and clashes with police since late January.

Friday's violence was rooted in an incident a week earlier, when Brotherhood members beat up activists who were spray-painting graffiti against the group outside its headquarters, located in an eastern district of Cairo. In response, anti-Brotherhood activists called for a protest Friday outside the headquarters. Both sides brought out hundreds of supporters, and the scene quickly turned to mayhem, with members of each side seen beating the other.

In Sunday's address, Morsi, who took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president, departed from prepared comments at a women's rights conference to deliver a scathing attack against his opponents. The president suggested that he may have to resort to "emergency" measures to deal with his opponents. He accused his foes of using paid thugs to sow chaos and the media of inciting violence.

He made no mention of any particular opposition group or politician and did not refer directly to Friday's calashes. However, his animated comments left little doubt that they were directed at the National Salvation front, the main opposition coalition, and former members of the Mubarak regime.

Alluding to Mubarak-era figures who have been acquitted in court of a range of charges, Morsi said he respected the law and judicial rulings, but added: "There is a president of the republic and there are emergency measures if any of them makes even the smallest of moves that undermines Egypt or the Egyptians."

"Their lives are worthless when it comes to the interests of Egypt and Egyptians," he said, pounding on the table. "I am a president after a revolution, meaning that we can sacrifice a few so the country can move forward. It is absolutely no problem."

Morsi also criticized the media, arguing that it was being used for political aims. His attack on the media has been a popular refrain by the Brotherhood in recent weeks. Dozens of Islamists are currently staging a sit-in outside the studios of TV networks critical of the president.

The Islamists on Sunday pelted police with rocks, sought to prevent talk show hosts and guests from going in or out of the complex, located in a suburb west of the capital. Police used tear gas when pelted with rocks. The sit-in continued on Monday.

Argentine illustrator wins child literature prize

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Argentine illustrator and writer Marisol Misenta, better known as Isol, won the 5 million kronor ($780,000) Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children's literature on Tuesday for picture books that "vibrate with energy and explosive emotions," the prize jury said.

Isol has written and illustrated 10 children's books, starting with her 1997 debut "Vida de Perros" ("A Dog's Life"). She has also illustrated works by other authors, including Argentine poet Jorge Lujan and U.S. novelist Paul Auster.

Her illustrations have the feel of a child's drawings, which she says reflects her desire to show readers that it's OK to break the rules.

"The idea is to do something both artistic and fun, which breaks a bit from what's expected," she told The Associated Press. "I like playing with words, and surprising people. The fact is that any truly artistic work has this quality. I want my books to be fun for children and for adults, too."

The annual award ? the world's largest for children's literature ? is named after the late Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of the Pippi Longstocking book series.

Isol's work is "humorous with surprising twists, occasionally philosophical and always subtle," the prize committee said. "Isol is on the children's side, seeing the world through their eyes and exposing the absurdities of the adult world."

Isol told AP she's been able to make a living for about four years on the income from her books, but couldn't imagine what she would do with the prize money.

"I've never had a strategy based on earning money," she said. "I never count on things before having them. Only now can I begin to think about what to do."

The award will presented at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 27.

Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM

  • Pros

Very sharp. Compact. Inexpensive. Wide aperture.

  • Cons Electronic manual focus. Hood not included. Not stabilized.
  • Bottom Line

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM, the standard prime lens for the EOS M, is compact, fast, and sharp.

By Jim Fisher

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ($249.99 direct) is one of the two lenses that launched along with Canon's EOS M compact interchangeable lens camera. The EOS M uses an APS-C sensor, so the 22mm focal length delivers a 35mm equivalent field of view when compared to full-frame cameras. The lens doesn't feature optical stabilization, but its f/2 aperture will help in low-light shooting.

The lens is impressively small. It measures 0.9 by 2.4 inches (HD) and weighs only 3.7 ounces. Standard 43mm filters are supported, and the lens can focus on objects as close as half a foot away from the camera. There is a manual focus ring, but it's a focus by wire design?moving it simply tells the camera to adjust the focus, rather than physically moving the glass. Because of this, there's a delay when adjusting focus manually. A lens hood is not included, but is available for $29.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the lens when paired with the EOS M. It exceeds 1,800 lines per picture height, the figure that we use as a cutoff for an acceptably sharp photo, at every tested aperture. At f/2 it records 2,294 lines, and increases only marginally to 2,331 lines at f/2.8. Resolution peaks at f/5.6, where it notches 2,362 lines. Distortion is completely negligible. The only other lens available for the EOS M, the EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM, is also quite sharp, but shows a lot of distortion at wider angles.

Chances are that you'll only be in the market for this lens if you bought the EOS M along with the 18-55mm zoom. The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM limits you to a single focal length, but it captures almost three times as much light, allowing you to shoot in dim conditions and to create a shallow depth of field. It also makes the EOS M a practical camera to slide into your pocket, which just isn't possible when the comparatively large zoom lens is attached.

(AP) ? An early spring snowstorm forced the cancellation of more than 100 flights at Denver International Airport and closed several roads Saturday as it moved eastward, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places.

The snow started falling around midnight in northeast Colorado and then moved into northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska.

Ten to 15 inches of snow had fallen by Saturday afternoon north of Interstate 70 in northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado, with another 1 to 2 inches expected in the area, said Ryan Husted, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., where 15 inches of snow had fallen.

The storm also dropped up to 7 inches of snow in southwestern Nebraska before tapering off Saturday afternoon, said David Pearson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service near Omaha, Neb.

"But the wind is really blowing, so visibility in those areas is still going to be pretty low," Pearson said.

Husted said winds gusting at speeds of up to 45 mph were creating snow drifts of 2 to 3 feet in parts of Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska.

I-70 had been shut down Saturday from Denver to Colby, Kan., because of poor visibility. The northbound lanes of Interstate 25 also were closed south of Fort Collins, Colo., because of multiple accidents.

"It's a mess here," said Jerry Killingsworth, a National Weather Service meteorologist also based in Goodland, Kan. "Heavy, wet snow, tree limbs down."

At the Goodland 24/7 truck stop, truckers milled around. With roads in the area closed, they are "just waiting," said Samantha Lamb, the truck stop's assistant manager.

"Our hotel across the street from us is pretty full," Lamb said. "Our parking lot has a good 35, 40 trucks in it."

As the system moved eastward, it threatened to inconvenience fans attending the NCAA men's college basketball tournament in Kansas City.

Scott Blair, a meteorologist in Pleasant Hill, Mo., said light showers and drizzle began switching over to snow Saturday afternoon in Kansas City and western Missouri. The heaviest snowfall was expected overnight, with up to 6 inches forecast for the Kansas City metropolitan area.

"If people don't need to be out driving tomorrow that would certainly be recommended," he said.

Dan Gavitt, vice president of the NCAA men's basketball championships, said teams and officials already are onsite and that no game delays are anticipated.

"This region routinely has winter snow and has the appropriate equipment and procedures to manage these winter conditions," Gavitt said in a written statement. "We encourage fans planning to attend games to pay attention to the weather, use good judgment and follow any directions from local authorities regarding travel and weather."

North Carolina coach Roy Williams was nonplussed.

"It's no distraction, unless the roof goes off, we'll still be able to play and the whole bit like that," Williams said.

Elsewhere, some churches and other organizations were calling off events. Among them, the final game of the Emporia State baseball series with Southwest Baptist was canceled.

Denver International Airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said about 106 flights have been canceled, many of which involved commuter jets headed to nearby destinations or to mountain towns.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said up to a foot of new snow in the mountains could create dangerous avalanche conditions.

Colorado State Patrol troopers also spent part of Saturday working a crash near Johnstown involving a tractor-trailer that burst into flames. An estimated 20 to 50 vehicles, including four tractor-trailers, crashed or slid off the roadway in the area. The patrol said several people were hospitalized, but no fatalities have been reported.

The system will move into Illinois and Indiana overnight and into Sunday.

Meteorologist Dan Smith with the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Ill., said snowstorms aren't uncommon in early spring. The latest the area has seen snow, he said, was April 23, in 1910.

"One good thing about (the snowstorms) is it doesn't matter how much you get, it usually doesn't stick around too long because temperatures start to warm up pretty good," he said.

Farther south, tornadoes were possible in Louisiana and Mississippi, while strong winds and low humidity could lead to forest fires and wildfires in parts of New Mexico and West Texas.
