Darren Lehmann backs Usman Khawaja to come good this time ? Cricket News Update
Darren Lehmann, the former Australian cricketer, is extremely impressed by the progress of Usman Khawaja in Sheffield Shield cricket and feels that the left-handed batsman can now go on and play for Australia for many years to come.
The Pakistan-born cricketer, who has played most of his domestic cricket for New South Wales, shifted to Queensland this season and was coached by Lehmann.
Khawaja is presently one of the leading run-scorers of Sheffield Shield cricket this season, with 438 runs in six first-class matches, which includes a ton and three half-centuries. As a result, the left-handed top-order batsman has been recalled to the Australian side for the third Test of the series against Sri Lanka, which starts tomorrow at Sydney.
The 26-year-old cricketer will play if the captain, Michael Clarke, is not declared fit for the match. However, with Michael Hussey set to quit the game after the last Test against the Lankans, Usman is most likely to replace the legendary middle-order batsman.
While speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the former left-handed batsman revealed that Khawaja has made certain adjustments in his game and he is now more attacking in his approach.
?I've been really impressed, he has adapted to a new aggressive style of play that we're really big on in Queensland,? Lehmann said. ?He's adjusted to that really well. We're really impressed with what he's doing and how he's gone about it.?
After a run of consistent performances at the domestic level, Usman made his way to the Test team last year and played six matches; however, the stylish left-hander failed to make an impression as he just has one half-century under his belt till date.
However, Lehmann believes that the youngster is a much improved cricketer now and will deliver the goods in international cricket this time.
?Technically there weren't too many changes, it was more a mindset with him and getting him to be really aggressive and positive in what he's doing. He's taken that on board. He has improved his fielding, he has improved his work ethic off the ground and we're really pleased for him,? he added.
