NHL lockout: Krys Barch pours out heart, rips owners in Twitter manifesto

Krys Barch is a rank-and-file NHL player?and he knows it. The 32-year-old forward has never scored more than four goals in a season and keeps his spot in the league because he's tough and can fight.

Barch, who signed a two-year deal with the New Jersey Devils in the offseason worth $750,000, voiced some of his concerns about the NHL lockout via Twitter on Saturday night. The only edit of his 26-tweet series is the removal of ellipses. Also, keep in mind that Barch is fine?his agent tweeted on Saturday night that he was just speaking his mind.

---

I sit here from Gand Bend, Ontario putting a pen to my heart and writing on paper what bleeds out. My name is Krys Barch. I have played approx 5 ? years in the NHL and have worked for every second of it. I Haven?t been a 1st round pick, bonus baby or a son of a hall of famer. I have made it through sweating, bleeding, cut Achilles, broken hands, concussions, broken orbital bones, 8 teeth knocked out, etc, etc, etc.

I sit in front of a fire, 8 OV deep and starting a bottle of Porte that will assist in the translations of my emotions into words! No different than a truck driver, farmer or line worker I have a shot and a beer. Not to deal with the days ahead but to ease the nerves from what my body has endured the days before.

I sit here with both my boys sleeping and my wife due with our 3rd. My thoughts racing on what I can conquer tomorrow to get our family ahead. Some times wonder if I should have existed when a word and a gun solidified and solved all problems. I feel the Wild West would more simplified than the world we live in now whet an employer who makes billions of dollars and a league with record revenues can tell me that I can?t do the things that my heart tells my me to do!

All what my heart tells me to do far surpasses what my body has endured. As I write this I dive deeper and deeper into my bottle of Porte giving wider views to the depths of my heart. As my pen warms from the fire, Neil Young and a fall Canadian night, I wonder how this work stoppage effects the owners? I wonder if the owners of Boston, New York, Washington etc, etc, have endured any of the injuries that I or any other player in the NHL have endured. Still they probably sit there smoking the same brand of cigar, sipping the same cognac, and going on vacation to one of the five houses they own? While we sit here knowing they want to take 20% of our paychecks.

One half to 3/4 of my peers will have to work for the next 50 years of their lives. Congratulations to the lucky select few that I have played with who have made salaries that they can choose to do whatever they want when they are done. But I have played most who do not!

If the NHL wants to teams in the south or struggling markets than the players along with the financially well to do teams need to start working together. Or they need to start to move the teams to the North where they will make money. The system allows the owners to continually take money from the players contract after contract where eventually over 40 some years the owners will have 80% of revenue. The only way to stop the work stoppages long into the future is fix the root cause of the problems.

The lockout is a procedure to take from the players to pay for the NHL mistakes. Let not allow the NHL to make any mor mistakes. Let the league and the players to come together to fix the mistakes that have been made and make sure non are made in the future. Lets get a deal where the owners, players, and fans benefit from. We?re we can be sitting around in beautiful Canadian fall?s around a fire playing and watching the game we love. Here?s to the truth and our next conversation.

As always speaking from my heart! Goodnight! Like me or hate me I speak what comes from my heart!

6 Ways Seniors Can Supercharge Brain Power

6 Ways Seniors Can Supercharge Brain Power

Aging is inevitable but there are effective ways seniors can decrease further memory decline and supercharge brain power.

You may already know that the brain is naturally prone to the aging process, just like other parts of the body. What you may not realize is this process begins when people reach their 30?s.

The brain becomes smaller, it stops creating fibrous tissues, and it?s capacity to make sensory connections are diminished. So, its important to start now to boost your memory to prevent any further deterioration.

Here?s some actions you can take to stay sharp:

  1. Get enough zzz's. It not only helps psychologically in regards to memorization, getting enough sleep reduces stress as well. Medical professionals advise snoozing for at least seven hours per night. They also recommend limiting your consumption of alcoholic beverages if you?re having trouble getting enough rest.
  2. Stay focused on one task at a time. Trying to do too many things at once is a huge distraction and hinders the ability to stay focused. As the mind ages, it becomes harder to recall names, reading material, recipes, etc. So, pay attention and limit the desire to multitask. Doing so will assist the brain in remembering info as its needed.
  3. Workout your mind. The brain is a muscle and needs exercise similar to the rest of the body. Chess, reading out loud, even brushing your teeth are all ways to exercise your mind, experts say. Online games that specialize in mind fitness are valuable resources, too. There?s no guarantee that digital games will prevent memory loss, but they can?t hurt. Find one or two that don?t require a fee and that promise to increase mental agility.
  4. Eat your fruits and veggies. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it applies to consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and spinach are a few excellent examples that also contain those all-important antioxidants. Plus, eating several servings per day assists in preventing those nasty free-radicals from injuring cells.
  5. Drink a little vino. You?ll receive a two-fold advantage with this one as it helps the heart and the mind. Drinking small amounts of wine may also decrease the advancement of dementia in seniors who have experienced a slight decline in brain power already. As long as this doesn?t interfere with sleep patterns, drink up...in moderation, of course!
  6. Good old physical fitness. As noted earlier, working out your mind is just as important as working out your body. You don?t have to exercise with an extreme fitness program or purchase a gym membership to experience results, either. Something as simple as walking several days per week will provide significant benefits to memory health after only a few months of this activity. So, put on your walking shoes and get started today. Your heart and your brain will thank you.

There?s no magic pill to supercharge brain power. If there were, the pharmaceutical industry would have already created it. Nor will you develop the type of memorization you had as a youngster.

But applying these techniques will do wonders in preventing further memory decline, now and in the future.

(AP) ? By tradition, supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez rouse voters before dawn on election day blaring bugle tunes from loudspeakers mounted on trucks cruising through pro-Chavez neighborhoods.

If that doesn't do the job, loyalists from Chavez's United Socialist Party of Venezuela keep extensive lists of supporters, many of whom depend on government jobs or benefits, and contact them to make sure they cast a ballot.

Get-out-the-vote ground games are key to elections all over the world. But in Venezuela, the strategy ahead of the Oct. 7 vote allegedly has involved not only gentle nudges but also intimidation. Both Chavez and challenger Henrique Capriles are mobilizing hundreds of thousands of supporters and will be keeping a close eye on the polls to make sure the other side doesn't try any tricks.

The opposition, which for the first time chose a single presidential candidate in a primary vote, is mounting its biggest-ever team of more than 200,000 volunteers. They include 117,000 poll monitors, and tens of thousands others who will get Capriles supporters to voting stations, driving them if necessary, said Leopoldo Lopez, Capriles' campaign manager.

Also for the first time, the opposition is assigning volunteers to every one of the country's 14,000 polling centers to watch over the voting, transmit initial results to their headquarters and do post-vote audits of paper receipts printed out by the voting machines, Lopez said. The opposition didn't send witnesses to all voting centers in the last election in 2006, when Chavez won by a wide margin. The president's campaign's better organization was seen as a key advantage.

"We've identified the need to have a presence at the voting tables because in the past we've had a weakness in terms of that presence," Lopez said at a news conference.

Chavez's side comes to the vote with an immediate advantage: a zealous grassroots juggernaut that rallies support for the president even in off-years. For the election, the president's supporters have been divided into "patrols," although Chavez has said some organizers complain they haven't been receiving complete instructions on logistics.

"Transport, logistics, we have to fine-tune all of that," Chavez told a crowd in the western farming state of Portuguesa on Monday. "The great patriotic machinery. That's what I want to underline."

Chavez's campaign machine has been visible in the red tents set up on sidewalks where supporters have been handing out pamphlets. The campaign calls the tents "Red Spots," after the chosen color of Chavez's socialist-inspired movement.

Folk music blared from the speakers at one of the tents on a recent evening in the Caracas district of Chacao, a bastion of opposition support.

"I want to show the world that we're holding a fair and transparent election, and that we're experiencing a true democratic process," said Luis Gustavo Marin, a court security chief. He said that on election day he'll be working as a member of one of the "patrols," visiting polling centers and providing logistical support to pro-Chavez observers.

He said others will be working as "guardians of the revolution" to oversee the voting process and make sure procedures are followed.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, a close ally of the president, said the socialist party will have witnesses at every voting center, and has already been going through its list of supporters.

"We have more than 7 million people who've been contacted already," Cabello said, "with first name, last name, ID number, where they vote and the time they're going to vote, because we're giving each of them a time to vote."

Each die-hard "Chavista" is encouraged to bring 10 others to cast ballots. Out of the country's 29 million people, a total of 18.9 million are registered voters, and Chavez has set a goal of winning 10 million votes.

Chavez has been leading in most polls ahead of the election, with one survey by the pollster Datanalisis showing him with a 10 percent lead this month. That poll, however, also showed that 11 percent of voters didn't reveal a preference.

Another survey by the polling firm Consultores 21 put the two candidates roughly even, with 46.5 percent saying they would vote for Capriles and nearly 46 percent choosing the president. The poll had an error margin of less than 3 percentage points.

The biggest challenge for the opposition is in traditionally pro-Chavez areas such as Caracas' 23 de Enero slum, where heavily armed pro-government groups swear allegiance to the president. Lopez said some of the more than 400 Capriles supporters who've signed up as volunteers in the neighborhood have received death threats.

"It's been hard in the zone where they have the greatest control and threatening presence," one volunteer said of the armed gangs, adding that Capriles supporters have nonetheless stepped forward to join election monitor teams despite the potential danger. She spoke on condition of anonymity, saying she feared for her safety.

The slum is among 278 polling places nationwide where the opposition says there are risks of conflicts and has urged election officials and the military to be on alert to prevent trouble.

Chavez and his supporters deny using coercion or intimidation to sway voters.

Some government opponents have also raised concerns that public employees and other voters who rely on government social programs are being pressured to vote for Chavez.

In fact, one group of Capriles supporters has appeared at his campaign marches wearing paper bags over their heads, saying they need to remain anonymous because they fear losing their government jobs or benefits.

The opposition candidate has called them "Chaca Chaca," an amalgram of Chavez and Capriles' names, and told public employees they have nothing to fear. He's also assured them their votes will be kept secure by the country's electronic balloting system and checks have shown that safeguards are in place to keep ballots secret.

However, some Capriles supporters still express fears that thumbprint readers used at polling centers could intimidate opposition-leaning voters.

Given intense interest in the race, analysts predict a high turnout.

In the last presidential vote in 2006, about 75 percent of registered voters cast ballots. The latest Datanalisis poll found that more than 79 percent said they are "very sure" they will vote on Oct. 7.

At a recent campaign march in the town of Los Teques, hundreds of opposition supporters blew whistles and horns as they paraded through the streets past a red tent where a group of Chavez supporters handed out campaign fliers.

Rafael Carrillo, a Chavez supporter who belongs to the Communist Party of Venezuela, paid little attention to the passing crowd as he danced and loudly sang along with the campaign jingle playing on some nearby speakers.

"We're going to give 10 million votes to our commander," Carrillo said. He said he thinks voting will proceed peacefully but that Chavez's supporters must be organized, including "to detect any type of sabotage" by government opponents.

"We're the majority," he said, "and we're going to show it on the 7th with votes."

PBS draws link between digital music rights and magic spells, somehow makes it look simple video

AAC files and the arcane don't have much in common on the surface. After some digging, however, PBS' Idea Channel has found that magic is an uncannily good analogy for digital music rights and explaining the thorny ethical issues that come with them. Both music and spells stem from grassroots cultures that give away their content for free, but (at least until an anti-magic clampdown at eBay) have since become businesses. That nature poses a key ethical question: when we're used to a free experience and can copy songs or spells as much as we like, what does it take to keep us as honest customers? As show host Mike Rugnetta suggests, it's a matter of personal responsibility -- if we want more of either, we have to think of the commerce as showing support for future work. You can catch Mike's clever train of thought after the break, and ponder what constitutes DRM for a potion while you're at it.

What is the FHA 203k Mortgage Loan Option?

Home buyers have quite a few choices when it comes to mortgage loan options. One of the most versatile and helpful on that list is the FHA 203k home improvement loan. No, this is not related to 401k retirement plans. It's a mortgage that allows the borrower to roll the cost of repairs, remodeling, renovations and other home improvements into one single mortgage. Let's take a closer look at this home buying option.
The FHA 203k is one of the most popular and diverse home improvement loans out there today. It's great for first time home buyers, upgrade buyers or even step-down buyers (if you're looking to downsize your empty nest for a retirement cottage). With this mortgage loan option, you can remodel the house you want or the home you already own with a refinance mortgage.
The possibilities are pretty wide. You can use the funds for simple upgrades to your home like a kitchen or bath improvement. Or if you need to, you could completely reconstruct a home that is currently unlivable. You can even use the FHA 203k to tear down an existing structure and build a new one. You just need to use some portion of the existing foundation.
You can borrow up to 96.5% of the appraised value - based on the value when the improvements or repairs are completed.
With the FHA 203k you can:
  • Replace or repair a roof
  • Re-side the home
  • Re-paint the inside and outside of the house
  • Replace old or missing appliances
  • Put in new flooring
  • Build or replace a deck/patio/porch
  • Check out other FHA 203k projects

Watch the video below for a 60 mortgage tip on buying a fixer upper with the FHA 203k and what that means for home buyers.

Most mortgage financing plans provide only permanent financing. In other words the lender won't close the loan unless the condition and value of the property provide adequate loan security. When rehabilitation is involved, this means that a lender typically requires the improvements to be finished before a long

What draws you into a role play?

Greetings all,

I have been wondering this for a while, and I find that for myself if the name is interesting I will click on it but if the person didn't put any time or design into their initial ad for the role play itself I will click the exit button almost immediately. However if I click on a role play that has an interesting title and I see a ton of writing, use of coding, and pictures I will be more likely to read through the role play and see if it strikes my fancy. Granted zombie role plays I click out of as soon as I realize that's what it is because I dislike them but I mean on a whole what draws you as a role player into a role play and wanting to submit a character? Does the time put into the initial ad make a difference to you at all? Or does it not matter so long as a fairly decent plot has been typed up?

AHRQ Innovations Exchange | Self-Directed Budget for Health and ...

Snapshot

Summary

Authorized by the Florida legislature, a state-funded program known as Florida Self-Directed Care gives persons with mental illness a quarterly allowance to purchase mental health and wellness services at their own discretion, with the goal of better integrating these individuals into their communities. With the help of life coaches, participants create a recovery plan and individual budget for traditional mental health recovery services (including psychotherapy, counseling, and medications) and other, nontraditional goods and services that facilitate recovery and successful living in the community (e.g., self-help services, exercise classes, transportation, dentistry services). The program has allowed participants to spend more time living in the community (instead of in psychiatric facilities or criminal justice settings), enhanced their ability to function, and increased their satisfaction with access to services and progress toward established goals.

Evidence Rating (What is this?)

Moderate: The evidence consists of pre- and post-implementation comparisons among participants of the number of days spent living in the community and their ability to function, along with comparisons of satisfaction with availability of services and progress toward established goals between participants and nonparticipants.

Problem Addressed

Programs that allow health care consumers to make their own care and service decisions enhance quality and patient satisfaction and reduce costs, which has led to growing support for their broad dissemination. Yet people with severe mental illness typically do not have access to such programs.1
  • Multiple benefits to financing models that allow self-determination: Self-determination refers to the right of individuals to control their own lives.2 In health care, including mental/behavioral health care, self-determination involves consumers being intimately involved in and controlling all decisions related to their care, including the services they receive.2 Health care financing models that support self-determination have proven successful. The Commonwealth Fund has found that such payment models increase patient satisfaction and quality of life and reduce costs.3 The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) found that the Cash and Counseling demonstration project?which featured self-directed budgets for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and children with special needs?reduced unmet care needs while maintaining or improving health outcomes.4
  • Unheeded calls to promote self-determination for those with mental illness: The evidence highlighted above has led to growing support for programs that promote self-directed care, especially for seniors and those with physical and mental disabilities. For example, a Commonwealth Fund report found that self-directed care models for these vulnerable populations are a growing international trend,3 while the President?s New Freedom Commission report called for ?self-directed services and supports for people with mental illnesses.5 "Yet, few individuals with mental illness currently have access to programs that support self-determination. In fact, the managed care models that have been embraced by many public mental health systems generally reduce consumer control over their care, including choice of treatment options.2

Description of the Innovative Activity

Authorized by the Florida legislature, a state-funded program known as Florida Self-Directed Care (FloridaSDC) gives persons with mental illness a quarterly allowance to purchase mental health and wellness services at their own discretion, with the goal of better integrating these individuals into their communities. With the help of life coaches, participants create a recovery plan and individual budget for traditional mental health recovery services and other nontraditional goods and services that facilitate recovery and successful living in the community. Participants obtain services from a preapproved provider network (for traditional services) or community organizations (for nontraditional services) and then submit receipts for reimbursement up to the budgeted amount. Key program elements include the following:
  • Authorizing legislation: In January 2000, the Florida Legislature passed the Self-Directed Care Bill (Florida House Bill 421) establishing FloridaSDC under Chapter 2001-152 of the Laws of Florida. The bill authorized a grant to fund a small monthly payment to 210 community-dwelling individuals with mental disorders.
  • Referral, screening, and enrollment: Individuals self-refer to the program (often after hearing about it from a current participant) or are referred by providers. Those interested are screened for eligibility via telephone by a staff member. To qualify, an individual must be a legally competent adult (age 18 or older) and a current or past recipient of disability income, and have an axis I or axis II mental disorder with or without a co-occurring substance abuse disorder. (Examples of axis I disorders include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoid affective disorder, whereas axis II disorders include, among others, borderline personality disorder.) Qualified participants cannot be concurrently enrolled in state-funded case management services. If an individual is determined to be eligible, the staff member completes an application for the SDC program. Once all the paperwork and information are received, the individual is placed on the waiting list. When they are ready to be enrolled, a life coach contacts the potential participant, schedules an appointment for an indepth interview, reiterates the program rules and guidelines, and determines the admission date (see bullet below for more information).
  • Recovery plan and self-directed budget, with support of life coach: Participants choose a life coach after reviewing their biographies on the program?s Web site; many life coaches are peers also in recovery from serious mental illness. The life coach meets with the participant to design a recovery plan, review and authorize the participant?s self-directed budget, and provide ongoing support as outlined below:
    • Mandatory recovery plan: Every participant develops and maintains a recovery plan that outlines his or her goals for recovery, reviews progress towards these goals, and describes how expenditures from the self-directed budget (see below) will help to achieve these goals.
    • Self-directed quarterly budget for recovery-related services: Each participant has access to a quarterly allowance for services directly related to the recovery plan. With the assistance of the life coach, participants design a personalized budget each quarter, listing services that will help them achieve their recovery goals and live in the community successfully and independently. Participants purchase services from a prescreened provider network (see bullet below for more details) or community-based organization and then submit receipts to their life coaches, who send them to the program office for review and processing of reimbursement up to the budgeted amount.
      • Size of allowance: The size of the allowance is set for a 3-year period based on a contract between the state and FloridaSDC. Participants currently receive an allowance of $418.35 per quarter; this figure was determined based on the annual program grant from the state, which provided $87,853.50 to serve 210 individuals.
      • Coverage of traditional and nontraditional services: The allowance can be used on any service that helps to promote recovery and independent living in the community. Roughly half the budget must be spent on traditional behavioral health services, such as psychotherapy, counseling services, and medications. Funds can also be spent on nontraditional services such as peer support; self-help, wellness, and exercise classes (e.g., Weight Watchers, YMCA memberships, yoga classes); services that promote community integration (e.g., food, clothing); transportation; education and job-related activities; and certain medical services (e.g., dentistry, ophthalmology, optometry, alternative medicine). While the program allows latitude in the kinds of services eligible for reimbursement, all services must be justified based on the individual?s diagnosis and recovery plan. For example, clients with a socialization issue or certain phobias can be reimbursed for movie tickets.
      • Ongoing support: Life coaches work with participants on an ongoing basis to identify and access needed goods and services within the community; act as an advocate when necessary; and generally support the participant?s efforts to live a successful, independent life in the community. Life coaches and participants talk on the telephone or meet face-to-face at least twice a month, and meet more frequently if necessary. For participants who sign a ?release of information? form, life coaches may also talk with their providers to discuss any concerns or participant needs. Either party?the life coach or provider?can initiate this conversation.
  • Accessing services through provider network or community organizations: Participants agree to obtain traditional services from providers that are part of the FloridaSDC network, which includes mental health providers and one dentist. These providers contract with the program via service agreements that specify service rates and lay out key program principles, including self-determination, a commitment to recovery, and a willingness to offer prompt access to services. Participants access nontraditional services from any community-based organization as long as the service received is related to recovery goals.
  • No time limit: There are no discharge criteria for the program, and clients can conceivably participate indefinitely. Participants typically leave the program for any of several reasons, including departure from the service area or a need for more intensive services through Florida's case management program.

Results

The program has allowed participants to spend more time living in the community (instead of in inpatient psychiatric facilities or criminal justice settings), enhanced their ability to function, and increased their satisfaction with access to services and progress toward goals.
  • Significantly more days in the community: An evaluation of 106 participants enrolled in the program between November 2002 and June 2004 found that they spent significantly more days living in the community (rather than in psychiatric inpatient facilities or criminal justice settings) in the year after enrolling than in the year before (354 days vs. 337 days, respectively).
  • Enhanced ability to function: In the year after enrollment, participants scored an average 58.3 (out of 100) on the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale, well above the 50.9 average in the year before enrollment. After a year, over one-third (34 percent) of participants held paid employment, 19 percent were enrolled in vocational skills training, and 16 percent were participating in volunteer activities. Many participants had achieved meaningful recovery goals, such as holding a job, obtaining education, or living independently in an apartment.
  • Higher satisfaction than similar nonparticipants: A qualitative analysis conducted in 2003 found that participants were highly satisfied with the availability of services and their rate of progress toward achieving established goals. In contrast, nonparticipants frequently reported not being able to obtain needed services and being less satisfied with progress toward their goals. The same analysis identified clear links between the goals listed in recovery plans and the goods and services purchased to meet these goals.

Evidence Rating (What is this?)

Moderate: The evidence consists of pre- and post-implementation comparisons among participants of the number of days spent living in the community and their ability to function, along with comparisons of satisfaction with availability of services and progress toward established goals between participants and nonparticipants.

Context of the Innovation

The State of Florida is home to roughly 660,000 adults with serious mental illness. The impetus for FloridaSDC came from the lobbying efforts of consumer and family mental health advocates, who convinced the legislature of the need to pass the Self-Directed Care Bill in 2001. This legislation extended the CMS Independence Plus Initiative?which provides cash allowances to elderly individuals and people with disabilities to purchase services that allow them to remain in the community?to individuals with psychiatric disabilities. (CMS established this initiative in response to a 1999 Supreme Court decision that found that unjustified segregation of persons with disabilities violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, and that states are responsible for ensuring the right of individuals to live in integrated environments rather than institutions.) The Self-Directed Care Bill authorized the Florida Department of Children and Families (the department responsible for mental health services in the state) to pilot test an alternative service delivery payment program based on self-directed care models for people with developmental disabilities. The resulting program eventually became FloridaSDC.

Aging True is a nonprofit organization that provides health, housing, financial, educational, and nutritional services to community-dwelling seniors that help them live safely at home. Since 2009, the state has contracted with Aging True to serve as the fiscal intermediary and administrative service organization for FloridaSDC in the 4th Congressional District, the initial pilot location of the program. Previous fiscal intermediaries in this district included Florida State University and the Mental Health Resource Center, a community-based mental health services provider. As the program expanded, the state contracted with other organizations to serve as the fiscal intermediary in these new geographic areas.

Planning and Development Process

As the current (but not original) fiscal intermediary of the program, the Aging True staff was not involved in the original planning and development of the program. Suggested planning and development steps include the following:
  • Set up advisory council: This council, composed of individuals recovering from mental illness, providers, and other community stakeholders, can help advocate for and develop the program and offer ongoing feedback on program services. FloridaSDC currently maintains an advisory council made up of program participants, their family members, and community stakeholders. The council advocates to ensure ongoing support for the program, discusses issues of concern to participants and coaches, serves as a liaison with legislators, and offers strategic feedback on program services and operations.
  • Market program broadly: Key steps in building awareness include creation of a marketing plan, meeting with mental health providers and representatives of community-based organizations, and engaging in other activities to generate program referrals.
  • Establish provider network: Meet with providers to determine their interest in the principles of self-directed care and their willingness to participate in a network.
  • Hire staff: Hire a program director, finance personnel, and life coaches based on educational and experience requirements set by the state.
  • Set up financial tracking system: Identify software programs that can be used (or modified) to track reimbursement to participants.
  • Start small and expand over time: Begin implementation in a single geographic area and expand to others after the program has been refined and proven effective. For example, FloridaSDC began in the state?s 4th Congressional District (which includes most of Jacksonville and other parts of northern Florida) and later expanded throughout the state.

Resources Used and Skills Needed

  • Staffing: Program staff includes seven life coaches and four part-time staff?the program director, the director of finance and operations, a fiscal assistant, and an administrative assistant. (These four individuals represent three full-time equivalent staff.) To work for FloridaSDC, the state requires that life coaches have a bachelor?s degree from an accredited university and 3 years? experience in the mental health field.
  • Costs: Annual program costs total $470,000 to cover staff and administrative expenses. The state allocates an additional $87,853.50 to cover the cost of services for program participants.

Funding Sources

Florida Department of Children and Families
Florida?s Self-Directed Care Bill allocated annual funding of $470,000 for program administration under the Florida Department of Children and Families? Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health (ADM) Trust Fund. Funding for services comes from the local District 4 ADM budget for community mental health services.end fs

Getting Started with This Innovation

  • Contract with independent intermediary: Having an independent organization serve as fiscal intermediary increases the program?s credibility and avoids potential conflicts of interest.
  • Choose customizable tracking software: Tracking expenditures can be complicated, as they will vary with respect to service type, cost, and location. Commercial software for tracking health expenditures may not work that well, since these systems generally allow tracking of only a few different types of expenditures from a defined list of providers. Instead, choose a system that can be easily adapted to accommodate a variety of expenditures and providers.
  • Choose life coaches carefully: While requirements related to education and experience will likely be defined by the contract, other qualities should also be considered when hiring life coaches, including financial skills, familiarity with the local community, ability to resolve conflicts and establish boundaries with clients, flexibility, professionalism, and empathy.

Sustaining This Innovation

  • Advocate for program: A strong advisory council can help advocate for the program on an ongoing basis, thus increasing the odds that the state maintains or increases program funding over time.

Mine the Hidden Job Market with LinkedIn | The Savvy Intern by ...

LinkedIn is more than an online resume. It is more than your modern-day Rolodex. It is a database of user-supplied information waiting for you to tap into it!

Where Are the Hidden Jobs?

You are looking for hidden jobs, which means they aren?t advertised. So how do you find them? You have to work this backwards. Who are the companies who could potentially hire you? Think about competitors, vendors, suppliers, and/or any other company that hires people to do what you want to do. This will require some research and this is where LinkedIn comes into play!

Search by Skills & Expertise

From the drop down menu ?More? select Skills & Expertise. Enter in a key word for your work/occupation.

In your results you will see LinkedIn profiles of people with this skill and on the side you will see other related skills. See what companies they work for. These are potential employers, or target companies. Also note on the right side of the screen the ?Related Companies? listed. Perhaps these are more targets. Go check them out.

And if you scroll to the bottom and you will notice recommended Groups on LinkedIn. If you are looking for industry groups to join, this could? be your ticket!

Search by Job Title

Use ?Advanced People Search? to search by Job Title. (Use the job titles you have found during your research.) You may want to start by filtering your search by ?current title only?. You can also filter your results by location. Take note of what companies these people work for and add those companies to your target list.

Searching Companies by Industry/Location Etc.

You can slide and dice a company search in many different ways:

  • Name
  • Location
  • Industry
  • Relationship (1st, 2nd, 3rd degree connections, or all LinkedIn members)
  • Size (number of employees)
  • Number of followers
  • Fortune 500 ranking

You may want to see who the employers are in your city. Or you may want to see where people you know work. Or you may know that you want to work for a small company. You can filter your search by one or many of these criteria to find potential employers (aka target companies).

Following Companies

You?ve developed a list of target companies. These are places you would like to work or at least you think you may. These are not necessarily companies that are posting jobs at this time. This list is any company that could potentially hire you because they have positions you could do!

With your list in hand, follow these companies!

Part of your regular routine is to monitor the updates of companies you are following. This is easily done by clicking on the ?company? tab on your home page of LinkedIn.

Now that you are following companies, LinkedIn is smart enough to suggest other companies you may want to follow. This is similar to the function you have seen with recommendations of people to connect with.

Company Research

See who you are connected to (or should be connected to) in the companies you are following. LinkedIn makes this easy to do. When you look at the company profile, it shows you who you are connected to who works there!

Check out the company?s tabs. They will have Employee Insights, and maybe even products/services and Careers tabs.

You can also see a list of companies viewed by other LinkedIn users. It says: ?viewers also viewed:? Chances are, the companies listed there are competitors or similar. See if you should add them to your growing target list! Then, follow them too! If you want to be extra sleuthy, you can see where employees used to work and where they went after. Again, more potential targets for you!

Now What?

Your mission now, should you choose to accept it is to make personal contact with people who work inside your target companies and schedule an informational meeting! You are seeking information about what is going on within the company. Your secondary mission is to get to know the person and have them get to know you so that when they have a job, you are the person they will call before it gets advertised!

Opportunities?Not Jobs

I have purposely NOT discussed the ?Job? search functionality within LinkedIn. Searching for posted jobs certainly is possible and something you can do on LinkedIn. I am pretty sure you can figure this out. Tapping into the hidden job market is a proactive approach to finding your next job. Give it a try! See what new companies you can add to your target list and begin following for potential opportunities!

Are there other tricks or creative ways you are harnessing the power and accessing the data from LinkedIn? Leave a comment! Inquiring minds want to know!

Brain parts can evolve independently, shows analysis of brains of 10,000 mice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? An evolutionary biologist at The University of Manchester, working with scientists in the United States, has found compelling evidence that parts of the brain can evolve independently from each other. It's hoped the findings will significantly advance our understanding of the brain.

The unique 15-year study with researchers at the University of Tennessee and Harvard Medical School also identified several genetic loci that control the size of different brain parts.

The aim of the research was to find out if different parts of the brain can respond independently of each other to evolutionary stimulus (mosaic evolution) or whether the brain responds as a whole (concerted evolution). Unlike previous studies the researchers compared the brain measurements within just one species. The findings have been published in the journal Nature Communications.

The brains of approximately 10,000 mice were analysed. Seven individual parts of each brain were measured by volume and weight. The entire genome, except the Y chromosome, was scanned for each animal and the gene set for each brain part identified.

Dr Reinmar Hager from the Faculty of Life Sciences compared variation in the size of the brain parts to variation in the genes. He found that the variation in the size of brain parts is controlled by the specific gene set for that brain part and not a shared set of genes.

He also compared the measurements for each mouse to the overall size of its brain. Surprisingly he found very little correlation between the sizes of the brain parts and the overall size of the brain.

Dr Hager says: "If all the different brain parts evolved as a whole we would expect that the same set of genes influences size in all parts. However, we found many gene variations for each different part of the brain supporting a mosaic scenario of brain evolution. We also found very little correlation between the size of the brain parts and the overall size of the brain. This again supports the mosaic evolutionary hypothesis."

Using the data collected from the mice Dr Hager and colleagues analysed the genes that influence the size of the brain to the genes that control the size of the body. They wanted to find out how independent size regulation of the brain is to that of the body.

They found evidence that the size of the brain is governed by an independent gene set to the one that controls the size of the body. Again they found vey little correlation between variations in the size of the body and the brain.

The evidence means that overall brain size can evolve independently of body size.

Following this research more work will be carried out to identify the specific genes that underlie the size of different parts in the brain

Dr Hager says: "If we can identify the specific genes that cause variations in the size of brain parts then there will be big implications for researchers looking at neuronal disease and brain development. We hope this research will significantly advance our understanding of the brain."

Pre-Life Chemistry Happens at Space Temperatures

60-Second Space

UV light, which radiates from stars and galaxies, can induce rapid changes in icy hydrocarbon molecules cooled to 5 kelvins, as on a comet. John Matson reports

More 60-Second Space

Icy objects such as comets may have helped start life on Earth by delivering water and carbon-based molecules to the young planet. Because putting something on ice doesn?t necessarily keep it from changing: a new study finds that even in frigid, deep space environments, simple hydrocarbon molecules can react to become more complex ones. The process even works when temperatures drop to near absolute zero.

But just what kind of organic molecules would exist on the icy bodies of a forming solar system? Researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, investigated how organic molecules might evolve toward greater complexity even in the cold of interstellar space.

The scientists found that ultraviolet light, which radiates from stars and galaxies, can induce rapid changes in icy hydrocarbon molecules cooled to 5 kelvin?that?s a frosty minus 451 degrees Fahrenheit.

The chemical reactions resulted in molecules of more complexity?which is the right direction to go if you want to eventually make amino acids and biological molecules. The study appears in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. [Murthy S. Gudipati1 and Rui Yang, In-Situ Probing of Radiation-Induced Processing of Organics in Astrophysical Ice Analogs?Novel Laser Desorption Laser Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopic Studies]

It just goes to show?if you really want to freeze something in place, you?d better encase it in carbonite.

DNV Launches Recommended Practice for ... - LNG World News

DNV Launches Recommended Practice for Shale Gas Extraction

DNV has launched a Recommended Practice (RP) for the entire life cycle of shale gas extraction, based on risk management principles.

The Recommended Practice provides a reference document for the independent verification of shale gas projects. The objective is for the RP to form the basis for a globally recognised standard for safe and sustainable shale gas extraction.

DNV?s Recommended Practice applies risk management principles, to ensure that threats related to shale gas activities are effectively and efficiently managed in an accurate, balanced, transparent and traceable way.

?The overall objective of this Recommended Practice is to establish guidelines and recommendations for the processes required to protect the safety of people and the environment during all phases of shale gas field development and operations,? says Remi Eriksen, CEO of DNV Maritime and Oil & Gas.

The company further recommends that shale gas operations are monitored and publicly reported. This will establish proper points of reference and consistent monitoring prior to, during and after operations, it advises carrying out extensive baseline surveys prior to the commencement of any shale gas activities. The information gathered should be openly disclosed to all stakeholders, including the general public.

?There is great public concern about the consequences of shale gas operations. Our recommended practice will contribute to increase the trust and confidence among the general public by implementing operational best practices and making the industry document how its activities are being executed in a safe and responsible manner,? says Eriksen.

A game changer

Shale gas is a game changer in the global energy market. The North American shale gas revolution has made shale gas an increasingly important source of natural gas and awoken other potential shale gas nations across the globe, including the UK, Poland and China.

The industry is facing a variety of challenges in managing the safety, health and environmental risks involved, and a global standard for safe and sustainable shale gas extraction is yet to be established.

Although several stakeholders have developed documents and guidelines covering parts of the activities involved, a complete risk management framework has, up to now, been lacking. The Recommended Practice focuses on the following aspects: management systems; safety, health, and the environment; well integrity; management of water and energy; infrastructure and logistics; public engagement; stakeholder communication; and permits. It has been developed following consultation with European and US authorities, oil and gas companies, NGOs and other industry bodies.

Representatives of the industry and regulators are now invited to engage in a discussion on the first version of the Recommended Practice for managing risks of shale gas operations as an initial step in creating a new international standard. Following this, a revised document will be made available.
