World stocks muted ahead of ECB meeting

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were mostly lower Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve took no new action to boost the U.S. economy and investors awaited announcements from the European Central Bank after its president vowed to keep the euro currency union intact.

The Fed's embrace of the monetary policy status quo was largely anticipated by markets. But it also appeared to signal in a statement released after a two-day meeting a growing inclination to take further steps to lift the U.S. economy out of its funk. The Fed noted that growth had slowed over the first half of the year. Yet analysts remain divided over whether the central bank will ease policy later this year.

Attention is now squarely focused on Thursday's meeting of the ECB. Global markets were boosted the past week after ECB President Mario Draghi vowed to do whatever it takes to keep the euro intact as Spain's financial situation deteriorated.

Hopes have been high that the ECB will announce powerful new measures to stem Europe's chronic debt crisis but it might be restrained by German opposition to the central bank resuming big purchases of government bonds ? to lower borrowing costs of financially struggling countries such as Spain or Italy ? or other steps.

Jens Weidmann, a leading ECB policymaker through his position as president of the Bundesbank, Germany's national bank, doesn't appear to be convinced that bond-buying is the right strategy. He continues to caution the ECB not to overstep its mandate of fighting inflation.

"The ECB is unlikely to meet current elevated expectations for far more aggressive action, risking another sharp turn for the worse in the markets," analysts at Daiwa in Hong Kong said in a report. "While market expectations are high, we believe that Draghi will not deliver what it is looking for, in particular large-scale bond purchases."

In early European trading, France's CAC 40 was off 0.1 percent at 3,317.17 and Germany's DAX dropped 0.3 percent to 6,733.69. Britain's FTSE 100 added 0.2 percent to 5,726.13. Wall Street was poised to open a little higher with Dow and S&P 500 futures both up 0.1 percent.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average finished up 0.4 percent at 8,653.18 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.7 percent to 19,690.20. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.6 percent to 1,869.40 and China's Shanghai Composite fell 0.6 percent to 2,111.18.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 37.62 points to 12,971.06 on Wednesday and broader indexes also closed down.

In energy trading, benchmark crude for September delivery was down 5 cents at $88.86 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 85 cents to end Wednesday in New York at $88.91 per barrel after the government said supplies have dropped more than analysts expected.

The euro was 0.2 percent higher at $1.226. The dollar rose 0.1 percent to 78.45 yen.

Magog Continental Cup and U23 Nationals | SportCaf?

If you have never been to Magog you are seriously missing out. It is such a beautiful small town with a cozy downtown and some interesting small shops and caf?s, almost like Canada?s mini Europe.
The last time I was in Magog was as a Junior in 2010, and the race was Junior Eastern Canadian Championships. I managed to win that race and it helped me to qualify for Junior Worlds.
Two years later, Magog is just as charming and I am back for a different race, this time it is U23 Nationals and a Continental Cup.

We stayed in a condo close to the race site, and it was very fun to stay with my teammates, coach CT, and Emma Lujan from B.C.?and Lawrence Fanous from Jordan. There was an electric atmosphere in the condo, and everyone was excited to be together and ready to race. We had some family dinners and played some board games to keep things loose before the race.
Going into the race, I was very at ease. I had put in a big block of training before Edmonton and then just rolled the next two weeks prepping for the race. I was rested and restless?more than eager to get to the start line.

It was my first time this year being first on the start list and I got to pick my position on the start line. Craig had watched the races that morning and directed me on where to go at the start and in the end it ended up being a great tactical decision. I was very happy to start beside Dominika Jamnicky, because I knew that if I could stick with her, or even try and be relatively close, I would be ahead of the rest of the field. We were a bit thrown off by a late start, but Domi and I took the opportunity to crack some jokes and ease into our warm up. We chatted some more with Craig and started with huge smiles on our faces.

The start was fast. Domi was out like a firecracker and it took everything I had to stay on her. I ran in the water as far and as fast as possible and then proceeded to dolphin dive before falling into the water and putting my head down to swim. Being an Olympic distance tri, the swim was 1500m, but it was a one loop swim course. All of the Olympic swims that I have done this year have been a 2 loop course and I was a bit bewildered by the long loop that seemed to take forever. At the first turn buoy, 600m out, I was way behind and a lead group had formed in front of me.
I knew that it was going to be essential for me to catch up and minimize the gap as much as possible. I got into a good rhythm and worked as hard as I could to catch up to the tail end of the leaders. By the time we reached the exit, I had swam my way up to a small group behind the leaders. I had a quick transition and hammered the first 4km of the bike to catch up to the lead group before the far turn. The rest of the bike was pretty uneventful, with a small group of Canadians working well together to keep the tempo up.

When I got off the bike and transitioned to the run, I didn?t feel great at first and ran in a small group with Ellen Pennock, Domi, and Alex Coates. Ellen and I got a small gap by the first turn and then proceeded to run together for the next two laps. My legs were feeling quite good and I knew that I had more in them. I held onto Ellen and then tried to get a small break before the last lap. My body cooperated, and just focused on getting my legs around and staying strong.

After the race on Saturday I headed out to a Fast and Female event with Amelie Kretz (the superstar winner of the Junior Elite race that morning) and we got to hang out with some fun girls and tell them about triathlon. There was also a dance but my feet and legs were so sore that I just kind of moved my arms around and shuffled a bit.

I was sad to leave Magog but hope to be back again very soon. Thanks as always to Cyclelogik, to all of my supporters, and to my family for coming out to take in the race. It was great to see the Asics reps at the race (who I have known since I was 16!) and spend the evening with them catching up.?

Members of Greece's extreme right Golden Dawn party handed out food parcels outside Parliament on Wednesday, but made sure only Greek citizens received the assistance.

Hundreds stood in line at Athens' main Syntagma Square, showing identification proving their Greek citizenship to pick up their food. Party volunteers dressed in black passed out milk, pasta, potatoes and olive oil in a one-day charity event that critics said was meant to soften the image of a party likened to neo-Nazi groups.

Greece is going through its fifth year of recession, with poverty and the unemployment rate rising, and Golden Dawn has made inroads in the country's political system with its vehement attacks against traditionally dominant parties and strongly anti-immigrant stance.

Its members have been accused of involvement in attacks against immigrants, ?and some of its senior officials have publicly declared admiration for Adolf Hitler. The party rejects the neo-Nazi label.

Public support, however, has increased 20-fold since elections in 2009, and Golden Dawn won 18 seats in the country's 300-seat parliament in June elections.

"Golden Dawn is a nationalist party and above all we are looking after Greeks," Golden Dawn Parliament member Nikolaos Michos told The Associated Press.

Greek politician who attacked rivals on TV sues victims for defamation

The party denies any involvement in a recent surge of street attacks against Asian immigrants in Athens and other cities, despite repeated claims to the contrary by migrant groups and human rights activists.

"At night they beat people up. And by day, they hand out food," Petros Constantinou, a left-wing Athens city councilman, told the AP.

"They are exploiting people's misery to fish for votes. They are despicable."

Ilias Kasidiaris, one of Golden Dawn's MPs, told Reuters TV that the party had bought the food "exclusively from Greek producers to give to Greek people," the BBC reported.

Christos Pappas, a fellow MP, added: "We are in Greece, so Greeks have priority."

"The illegal immigrants that have come here, who enjoy, if you will, all the rights and privileges that come from Greek taxpayers are illegal, invaders. They are a threat to Greece," Pappas said, according to the BBC.
