Richard Barrington: The Brighter Side for Deposit Accounts

With interest rates scraping along just above zero, it's easy to grow frustrated with savings accounts and other bank deposit products. However, these are very troubled financial times, and as uninspiring as savings account rates have become, the grass may not be greener anywhere else.

According to the FDIC, by late May the average U.S. savings account rate had fallen to 0.10 percent. One-month CD rates were even lower, at 0.08 percent, while money market rates offered just a little extra, at an average of 0.13 percent. None of these represent a very substantial rate of return, but under the adverse financial circumstances of today, here are four reasons deposit account customers can count their blessings.

1. FDIC insurance

Amid concerns over Greece possibly leaving the euro, Greek citizens have started withdrawing their savings from Greek banks. This in turn has created concern that a run on Greek banks could exacerbate that country's financial woes. Also, broader worries about the euro raise the specter of similar bank runs spreading to some of the weaker economies in Europe.

All of this is a reminder that while people in the U.S. tend to take FDIC insurance for granted, it is a double-blessing for bank customers in this country. It not only guarantees individuals security of their deposits, but in cases such as 2008, where there were isolated incidents of people clamoring to get their deposits out of particular banks, the reassurance of FDIC insurance helped stop those incidents from spreading into a general panic.

2. Something is better than nothing

The Facebook IPO was a spectacular flop, and the stock market has been beaten up pretty badly during the past month. Over one particularly ugly stretch, the S&P 500 declined on 11 out of 13 trading days. Suddenly, breaking even and perhaps earning a few basis points of interest looks pretty good to beleaguered stock investors. To think of it from a bank depositor's point of view, it is natural to look for alternatives when bank rates are as low as they are today, but it is difficult to find alternatives that don't represent a substantial step-up in risk.

3. The U.S. currency

The Greek crisis has weakened the euro. Suddenly though, Greek citizens are clinging to the euro like shipwreck survivors clinging to floating debris, because they know any stand-alone Greek currency would be substantially weaker than the euro. A weak currency brings with it the threat of high inflation. This is another blessing for U.S. bank depositors -- those dollar-denominated deposits look especially solid against the backdrop of the European currency crisis.

4. Inflation's holiday

Finally, U.S. depositors caught a break when the most recent inflation report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed no inflation for the month of April. Inflation has faded primarily because oil and gas prices have reversed their rising trend from earlier in the year. If this continues, depositors will at least get to keep the value from the little interest they earn.

The above are all reasons to appreciate U.S. savings accounts, but they are not reasons to settle for mediocre savings account interest rates. If you shop for higher savings account rates, you can not only count your blessings, but multiply them as well.

Venus Retrograde, The Transit & Relationships ? Love Dove Tarot

Planet Venus

Venus

If you have been reading the Astrology forecasts for the Venus transit, you may be feeling a bit confused right now. There is talk of emerging divine feminine energy balancing the male energy which was purified during the latest eclipse of the sun.

There are whispers and rumours about preparing for Ascension in December? all very mystical and difficult to translate to practical day-to-day living for most of us (yes, that includes me!).

On a practical and scientific level it means that Venus (from earth?s perspective) will be crossing the surface of the sun between the 5-6 of June. This only happens every 100-120 years when we get two transits together, 8 years apart.

But the science and the mysticism of it all is probably not why you?re here. You want to know what this transit is going to mean to your relationship and how you can best harness the energy and magick of it all, right?

This Venus transit is retrograde in the sign of versatile, playful, witty and flitty Gemini. The energy is not to be grasped or clung to. Allow it to seep in through your skin next time you spend some time in the Sun and know that there is very little you have to do. Illumination of your mind and heart will happen whatever you do.

No, you don?t need to spend hours chanting, calling on Dolphin Masters or meditating on the 17 higher chakras. No matter what you do, you will experience an injection of higher consciousness and this will lead to changes in your relating.

Now for the juicy part. The Tarot can help you see what those changes are likely to be.

Shuffle your deck and go through the cards until you get to the Death card ? a symbol for change and transformation. The card on the left of the Death card is something you will be leaving behind and the card on the right is what is being birthed into your consciousness in terms of relating.

Click HERE to view a SAMPLE READING.

You can do this together with your partner, either taking turns using the same deck, or doing it simultaneously using two separate decks. Remember to be supportive and to not blame your beloved. Do not drag up the past but make this a celebration in honour of the birth of a more loving way of relating. Focus on the fun and the forward movement!

You don?t have to do anything with this information. Unless you want to? Keep playing with the cards, have a snog or go out for a drink. It?s all sacred if it?s done with love!

Study Skills Are Boring! Or, Are They? | *****

Study skills are boring!? That is what most students tell me when I first meet them.

Boring!? These are skills that can help them get better grades and spend less time on homework how can they be boring?

Honestly, there is a good explanation for the bad rap that study skills have developed over the years because a lot of boring things are labeled as ?study skills.? Learning how to use guide words in a dictionary...a necessary skill, but boring! SQ3R a reading strategy with many merits, but leaves me asking, ?Who wants to take the time to do all five steps?? Boring! Identifying the main idea and supporting details on endless worksheets? Another important skill, but still boring.

There is a broader and more important role study skills should be playing in the lives of our middle and high school students, especially in our current Information Age, when we must prepare students for many careers and jobs that do not even exist yet. Study skills are:

* The skills required to be an independent learner. * Skills that build confidence. * Skills that develop efficiency. * Skills that improve performance to prepare our students for high-stakes tests and the globally competitive job market of the future. * Skills that enable students to be proactive, make good decisions, and think critically.

The LAST thing they should be is boring!

We were all born with a natural desire to learn. Infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers love to explore their world and take pride in learning new things. Just yesterday, my four-year-old was so excited about learning that he stood on top of his chair and raised both arms in triumph exclaiming in a ?na-na-na-na-na-na? tone, ?I learned a new wo-rd! I learned a new wo-rd!? THAT was utter exhilaration over learning!

But, sometime in the elementary years, most students lose that enthusiasm for learning, usually because they lose all of their choices. Learning becomes dictated by their teachers, school districts, and state-mandated curriculum. They are suddenly swallowed into a bureaucracy of texts, tests, and lectures that would bore any rational human being.

Much of these mandates and ?lack of choices? are and will remain out of students? control, but there is a vital component we can offer students to bring some pizzazz back to learning. Teach them study skills principles and strategies to be organized and learn efficiently. Show them they have the power to beat the system. Well, maybe not beat the system, but at least work with the system strategically to be successful. When strategic learning enters the picture, students regain some control. They develop personal power. And they learn important life-long skills that will someday help them manage a home and career.

These may sound like lofty concepts, but they have real, concreteimplications. For example, as parents and educators:

* We can acknowledge that organizing papers and school-work is difficult because traditional systems actually complicate the process. We can then explore principles for organizing and strategies to simplify the process. * We can acknowledge that text-books are boring. But, if students understand how to maximize their brain?s learning process, they can be strategic readers and exponentially increase their reading comprehension while only reading a fraction of the text. * When we want to say, ?Why can?t you plan ahead?!? we can pause and understand that they have never really learned how to plan ahead. Armed with that perspective, we can help them discover how to prioritize their time and think proactively. There is a commercial that depicts two professionals heading into their office building at the beginning of the day. They are both neatly groomed and dressed professionally. You can presume from their appearance and surroundings that they are well-educated people. They are both half-way up an escalator when the escalator suddenly stops.

They look shocked and bewildered. ?I don?t need this!? complains the woman. ?Figures!? grumbles the man. They look around in panic
and start feeling around for their cell phones, but both discover they have forgotten their phones at home.

As the commercial continues, these two ?smart professionals? remain stranded for what appears to be hours, yelling and screaming for help and wallowing in their unfortunate sorrow that they are stuck on an escalator. That?s right it?s an escalator, NOT an elevator.

Are you wondering why they don?t just stand up and walk off?

That?s the point of the commercial...some solutions are so blatantly obvious to some, but not to all. Students, in particular, are commonly stuck on their own escalators, running for help every time they get stuck and not employing any strategies or critical thinking to move forward.

Arming students with study skills --skills for thinking strategically about organizing, managing time, and learning-- gives them the power to simply stand up and walk off their own escalator.

Taking control over their learning? Learning how to ?play in thesystem? with strategy? There is nothing boring about that!

2/3 of Home Buyers Open To Foreclosures; Real Estate Confidence ...

Confidence in the real estate market continues to grow in 2011, and as that force stabilizes prices in many areas, home buyers are gaining confidence in the process of buying foreclosures. ?This is the conclusion of a recent study by Realtor.com, and it seems to coincide with what we are seeing in the Seattle real estate market.

While the process of buying foreclosures was a mystery to most home buyers a few years ago, it?s become a commonplace?occurrence?in today?s market. ?While short sales are still a boondoggle that many buyers won?t attempt, bank-owned foreclosures have actually become a fairly standardized transaction. ?Home buyers are seeing that the process is very similar to buying a traditional home, with just a bit more paperwork and time involved.

The study showed that 65% of home buyers thought it was likely that they would buy homes that had gone through the foreclosure process. ?Many of these buyers end up buying traditional resales, but their confidence in the REO/bank-owned arena makes for a more confident general buying public.

Seattle foreclosures are still just a fraction of the overall market, and most Seattle and Eastside foreclosures sell fairly quickly. ?Pricing is sometimes discounted, although many foreclosures in the Seattle area are being priced at the same level as traditional resales. ?The lack of inventory on the market is allowing many of these foreclosures to sell for maket value.

From Inman on the Realtor.com story:

Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of potential homebuyers surveyed by Realtor.com this month say they are likely to buy a home that?s been through the foreclosure process, compared with 25 percent in October 2009.

The vast majority of those looking at real estate owned (REO) properties planned to live in them ? only 6.9 percent of potential homebuyers said they were looking to buy a foreclosure as an investment, down from 13.2 percent in October.

The ?unexpected interest? in foreclosures is a result of reductions in supply, expectations that home prices will rise, and changing attitudes towards foreclosures, said Steve Berkowitz, CEO of Realtor.com operator Move Inc.

Giant black hole kicked out of home galaxy

Monday, June 4, 2012

Astronomers have found strong evidence that a massive black hole is being ejected from its host galaxy at a speed of several million miles per hour. New observations from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory suggest that the black hole collided and merged with another black hole and received a powerful recoil kick from gravitational wave radiation.

"It's hard to believe that a supermassive black hole weighing millions of times the mass of the sun could be moved at all, let alone kicked out of a galaxy at enormous speed," said Francesca Civano of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), who led the new study. "But these new data support the idea that gravitational waves -- ripples in the fabric of space first predicted by Albert Einstein but never detected directly -- can exert an extremely powerful force."

Although the ejection of a supermassive black hole from a galaxy by recoil because more gravitational waves are being emitted in one direction than another is likely to be rare, it nevertheless could mean that there are many giant black holes roaming undetected out in the vast spaces between galaxies.

"These black holes would be invisible to us," said co-author Laura Blecha, also of CfA, "because they have consumed all of the gas surrounding them after being thrown out of their home galaxy."

Civano and her group have been studying a system known as CID-42, located in the middle of a galaxy about 4 billion light years away. They had previously spotted two distinct, compact sources of optical light in CID-42, using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

More optical data from the ground-based Magellan and Very Large Telescopes in Chile supplied a spectrum (that is, the distribution of optical light with energy) that suggested the two sources in CID-42 are moving apart at a speed of at least 3 million miles per hour.

Previous Chandra observations detected a bright X-ray source likely caused by super-heated material around one or more supermassive black holes. However, they could not distinguish whether the X-rays came from one or both of the optical sources because Chandra was not pointed directly at CID-42, giving an X-ray source that was less sharp than usual.

"The previous data told us that there was something special going on, but we couldn't tell if there were two black holes or just one," said another co-author Martin Elvis, also of CfA. "We needed new X-ray data to separate the sources."

When Chandra's sharp High Resolution Camera was pointed directly at CID-42, the resulting data showed that X-rays were coming only from one of the sources. The team thinks that when two galaxies collided, the supermassive black holes in the center of each galaxy also collided. The two black holes then merged to form a single black hole that recoiled from gravitational waves produced by the collision, which gave the newly merged black hole a sufficiently large kick for it to eventually escape from the galaxy. The other optical source is thought to be the bright star cluster that was left behind. This picture is consistent with recent computer simulations of merging black holes, which show that merged black holes can receive powerful kicks from the emission of gravitational waves.

There are two other possible explanations for what is happening in CID-42. One would involve an encounter between three supermassive black holes, resulting in the lightest one being ejected. Another idea is that CID-42 contains two supermassive black holes spiraling toward one another, rather than one moving quickly away.

Both of these alternate explanations would require at least one of the supermassive black holes to be very obscured, since only one bright X-ray source is observed. Thus the Chandra data support the idea of a black hole recoiling because of gravitational waves.

The source is located in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, a large, multi-wavelength survey.
